I can not do any pull-ups right now and need an exercise I can do instead that targets the same muscles. Maybe a way to build up to doing pull-ups? I do workouts at home and only have access to basic weights and a bench.

A good exercise to do in place of pull ups would be lat pulldowns. Mind you, lat pulldowns certainly aren’t as effective as pull ups but they are a decent alternative. Another exercise with weights that would be good would be the military press. Maybe another good exercise to do would be push ups. Those are good for moderate strength building.
