I live in the city so there really is no way for me to be able to let him be outside to play. He’s been gaining a lot of weight and I was just wondering what are some things that could help him not only lose weight, but also get more exercise. I try to play with him, but he has ADHD worse than most cats - he gets bored fairly easy. Help, please!

In my backyard, there are several stray cats. I also have a cat, and this is why I know this. If you buy a laser (laserpointer, it points a red beam) for like $1, point it at the floor. When it catches your cats attention, she will chase after it. It makes them go crazy, probably since they think it’s a bug or mouse that they can chase. Do this for whatever amount of time, and your cat will get exercise. It doesn’t get old either, since they always think it’s a bug. Occasionally, let them “catch it”. good luck, hope your cat gets healthier.

Get him to lose weight and then he will become moe active.. To lose weight he needs the proper food for the species not kitty crack

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrediant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don’t use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn’t have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all.
THE BEST CAT FOODS CONTAIN NO GRAINS NO BYPOODUCTS NO MEAL
Cats are meat eaters not cereal or rice eaters
Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food.
Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck?

    Please read about cat nutrition.

Vetinarian diets The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza.

Buy different small toys for him.
balls with bells, string & fake mice..ect.
Alternate those toys whenever he gets bored. Let him catch the toys sometimes too so that the game stays fun for him.

My cat likes to chase shadows. It never gets old for him so maybe try a laser pointer.

There’s also food for overweight cats. Look into buying that for him or put a little less food down.

hahaha, I think that ALL cats get fat, and ALL cats have ADHD. I change my cats toys around, from a rolled up ball of tinfoil, to the “Cat dancer” (A piece of paper at the end of a wire) to a bunch of twist ties tied together to a laser pointer (the best of all!) she does get bored of them, but it gives her exercise for a few minutes every day.

Try a laser pen - not one of those silly ones for pets, but one of the ones they use to point at presentation screens. Most cats can’t resist them!

Proper feeding is really the only way you’re going to get the cat to lose weight though. You can only exercise a cat, or any animal so much but at the end of the day what you need to do is make sure he’s burning off more than he’s putting in. Even animals who don’t move much at all can still lose weight if the energy input and output is properly balanced.

Feed him cat food EXCLUSIVELY and make sure it’s a premium quality one, i.e. one not available at a supermarket. Find out (from a vet) what your cat’s ideal weight is and check the feeding guide on the food for the daily amount of food for the weight your cat is supposed to be.

Lastly, it’s important to weigh the animal regularly to make sure the diet regime is working, it will need to be adjusted as you go along.

EDIT: Oh go away Ken, they asked for help with weight loss not your sermon on dry food. You’ve been copy and pasting that same answer for MONTHS and it’s misinformed, uneducated nonsense.

There are so many ways to get your cat to exercise.

One is the laser pointer like suggested but you can also get a cat wand with a toy at the end where you play with your cat. You could also walk around your house dragging a string. You can make your a cat a paper ball and toss it around or give him a fake toy mouse.

A toy I made once was I bought a kid’s fishing pole for $5. I attached a cat toy to it and I’d cast it down a hall and make my cat chase it back to me. It was a great toy and lots of fun for the both of us.

Get creative and keep buying your cat toys to keep him interested. Toys don’t have to cost a lot of money and some of their favorites were the cheap ones.

You could also get him another cat friend. Maybe he’s just bored and lonely.

Most cats enjoy hunting style games, so get a toy that dangles off a wand stick and have him chase after that. If he’s not interested in those types of toys, you can encourage him to exercise by tying a piece of cooked meat to the end of a piece of string and get him to chase after that. (If you’re busy doing housework etc., you could alays tie the string to your belt so that he follows you as you move around the house).

Divide his daily food allowance into four portions and hide it in different locations around the home so that he has to go “hunting” for it. If you feed him dry food, you can place a handful inside a cat treat ball. It makes meals last longer and will keep him both mentally and physically active.
