I am a 23 y/o female 5′5″ tall and I weigh 157 lbs but I want to weigh 135. How many calories should I eat a day to lose weight the healthy way? I workout five times a week walking uphill and lifting light weights for 1 hour sessions.

For your height..you need to intake no more then 1300 calories while your on a diet..the about 1800 to maintain it. Good luck!

The best way to do it would be to find out how many calories you are consuming, on average, per day, then cut it by 200/day. It is easier on your body that way, especially since you are working out so much and thus need to consume more calories than the average person. You don’t want to accidentally cut too many calories out.

If you don’t want to do all that, you could probably start somewhere around 1700/day, and if that feels like too much, do a little less, and try that for a week and see if you have lost weight. You don’t want to lose any more than 1-2lbs/week, so if you are losing more than that, you are probably not eating enough.

My nutritionist has told me that it doesn’t matter how many calories you eat. If you follow the food pyramid as exact as possible and get a regular exercise routine, your body will lose or gain as it needs. I am a recovering anorexic and when I went into treatment, after 3 months (and 5000 calories a day for a while) I still only gained 16 pounds (I weighed 103 at 5′7″ and now am 119)…putting me at a lower side of a healthy weight for my body shape. After that I haven’t gained a pound. As long as I follow the food pyramid I never will. It really shocked me.

Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) with an online calculator. This tells you how many calories you burn if you did nothing all day- just lie in bed. I’m guessing it will be around 1400 calories. With your activity level, you multiply the BMR by a factor (1.2 for sedentary, 1.5 for moderate, etc) to get the calories you most likely burn each day. You want to eat between those two numbers, and not go below your BMR.
